Russian Jäger at the Alma 2010

Pic by Lucille. When I started this blog in 2009 it was mainly to publicise the Crimean reenactment scene. We thought about doing a Russian group in the U.K. We had a good response. We had friends in Russia so we were intending on doing the Alma event. But international events got in the way. This was what we were aiming at. Using generic firearms.

Rifle Brigade Reenactment - Inkerman

One of the best Crimean groups.

5th November is the 170th anniversary of the battle of Inkerman. A bloody infantry battle fought between the Russians and the British, aided by the French during the Crimean War.

Three companies of 2nd RB were first in the fray and checked Soimonoff’s advance up the Careenage Ravine. Major Rooper and Lt.Colonel Horsford commanded 3 companies each of 1RB and fought the whole of the day mainly each side of shell hill, which had been taken by the Russians and who mounted their artillery upon it. They eventually captured shell hill at the point of the sword and drove the Russians from it.

The uniform and equipment of a Russian soldier.

Today's anniversary is the battle of Inkerman so to ring the changes here is an illuminating feature on the Russian soldier's kit. It's in Russian but I think it is interesting nevertheless.
