 He says; 'Very rare photo of a complete regiment under the Second Empire. This is the cavalry regiment of the Imperial Guard (created on May 1, 1854), located in Versailles. Formed from elements from the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th Mounted Artillery Regiments of the line. He will be engaged in Crimea, Italy and during the War of 1870.

The barracks housing the Garde artillery was built after 1854 on the site of the old quarry of the Grande Ecurie, bordered to the west by the Grande Ecuria, to the east by the ex-prison Saint-Pierre and the courts, it extended between Avenue de Saint-Cloud and Avenue de Paris. It was destroyed by an accidental shell explosion in 1944.

The cavalry uniform consisted of a dolman in dark blue sheet, decorated with five rows of copper buttons; scarlet straps and braids; blue trousers, scarlet stripes and passports; black seal skin talpack with flame and scarlet lace; egret in lilac, scarlet and white; coat in dark blue sheet; white bufflettery; gibernet decorated with a crowned eagle, with crossed cannons; dark blue sheet sabretache; scarlet gallon; eagle plate.'

The questions have been pouring in over the last few days, and while I’ve given you several sneak peeks in the past, I want to make it official: yes, the Prussians are coming to our next Kickstarter in a big way! This collection is shaping up to be a truly comprehensive range in 28mm, and I’m making sure they’ll be available both as high-quality STL files for 3D printing and as traditional white metal miniatures.

We aren't just doing a handful of poses, either. The campaign will feature everything from the prestigious Guard Infantry to the backbone of the army—the Line Infantry, including Musketeers, Grenadiers, and Fusiliers. To bring your tabletop battles and dioramas to life, we are also including Generals, casualty figures, and even small vignette scenes. For the hobbyists who love the details, you can also look forward to authentic flags and uniform plates to ensure your regiment looks exactly right for the 1866–1870 period (and with a little bit of leniency, 1864 as well!). I’ve attached some of the latest finished renders to show you the level of detail we’re aiming for. Take a look and let me know which unit you're most excited to see on the table!

''This time, we’re showcasing Prussian Grenadiers and Fusiliers with historically correct helmet plates and the proper fusilier rifles. The Prussia Kickstarter will also cover all Line and Guard Infantry regiments, with units presented in a wide variety of poses and equipped with different gear and carrying styles. Backpacks were occasionally worn in combat, but most often left behind before battle, and we’ve reflected that as well. You’ll also see different ways of wearing the greatcoat roll, accurate officer and sergeant swords, and—of course—a whole bunch of flags and uniform plates.''

They are highly inspired by the work of artist Edouard Detaille, who is showing French guard in campaign dress but officers wearing aquilettes. It's a nice and distinct feature to easily see the difference between guard and line officers.

Miniatures will be available as part of one of our upcoming Kickstarter campaigns, both as STL files and 28mm metal miniatures.

This finely detailed officer of the Guard Grenadiers offers a glimpse into one of our upcoming releases, capturing the elegance, authority, and battlefield presence of Napoleon’s III legendary elite.

This officer is just one of many soldiers of the Imperial Guard that we plan to unveil in one of our future Kickstarter campaigns. At the moment, no release date has been announced—but much more is on the way.

What's next for Bavaria Miniatures?

 

As we wrap up 2025, I want to thank all of you—my loyal customers, supporters, and friends—for an incredible year. Your enthusiasm, ideas, feedback, and passion for history and miniatures keep Bavaria Miniatures moving forward. Over the past year I’ve spent countless hours researching, visiting museums, digging through books, and discussing ideas with many of you. It’s been fantastic!

Exciting times are ahead: I’m currently working on several major projects for the Franco-Prussian War, all in 28mm, available in metal and as STL files.

1. The Prussians

This will be one of the most extensive ranges ever produced by Bavaria Miniatures. Alongside the Guard Infantry, Guard Grenadiers, and Guard Fusiliers, the line will—for the first time—feature Line Fusiliers in proper campaign gear, as well as Grenadiers and Musketeers in a wide variety of poses and with detailed equipment.

The range also includes mounted officers, generals, personalities, wagons, limbers, and civilians. A huge portion of the sculpting is finished, but I keep expanding the line and adding new sets. Currently, over 40 sets are planned! Expect exclusive Kickstarter miniatures, dioramas and scenes inspired by historical paintings, free flags, tons of uniform plates, and much more.

2. The French Imperial Guard, Turcos, and Zouaves

Sculpting for this range began only a few weeks ago. It will include mounted generals and ADCs, along with a full set of flags, tutorials, and uniform plates.

3. The Brunswickers of 1870

Most of the sculpting is complete, test prints are underway, and I’ll start painting the first figures soon. This will be a single Kickstarter covering the entire brigade—infantry, hussars, artillery, mounted officers, and generals. As always, flags, painting tutorials, and uniform plates will accompany the release.

4. Bavarian Additions

The Bavarians were my first two Kickstarters, and I want to complete them properly. New additions will include Bavarians in greatcoats and winter gear, an expanded staff with officers and generals, casualties, limbers, small dioramas, charging poses, and more.

At Bavaria Miniatures, quality comes first: excellent sculpting, the best research I can provide, premium painting, and well-presented photos. I don’t work under time pressure—the principle is: “It’s done when it’s done.”

So I can’t announce release dates yet, but I’ll keep you updated as always.
