Chasseurs d'Afrique by Roger Fenton

Like the Zouaves the Chasseurs d'Afriques made quite a name for themselves in the Crimea - most famously for their charge at Balaclava that saved the Light Brigade from destruction.

  1. Sadly, that isnt a Chasseur d'Afique. Look at the uniform: the collar is the same colour as his trousers (garance) as are his cuffs which are fastened with rectangular flaps with three buttons on. Also he is wearing fringed epaulettes....

    This is, actually, an officer of Carabiniers a Cheval, in Petit Tenue - Sous-Lieutenant Pierre de Castellane, who was Officier d'Ordonnance to General Canrobert.
