1st Minnesota Regiment 1861 Don Troiani.

 From Spared and Shared

"An 1861 letter I transcribed some time ago by Weston L. Thomas. In his letter, Weston mentions the red shirts worn by the boys of the 1st Minnesota Infantry during the Battle of Bull Run. In the National Republican of 4 July 1861, it was printed that, “No uniforms had been provided, but the State soon furnished each private and non-commissioned officer with a shirt, a black felt hat, a pair of black pants, and a pair of socks. Other articles of clothing were supplied from time to time, either by the men or their friends. The shirts were woolen, but of various colors, red predominating. Generally the shirts were of the kind then affected by steamboat men and men of the frontiers, and some of them were very fancifully ornamented with crescents, stars, trefoils, etc. Company K had gray suits presented by the citizens of Winona.”   https://sparedshared12.wordpress.com/2016/05/01/1861-to-mrs-julia-a-thomas/
