What you call a naive painting. But this general was indeed mortally wounded by a shell splinter when commanding the fire of his batteries. He was taken into the Schafbusch farm where he expired shortly afterwards. There is a famous painting of the Crown Prince of Prussia and his staff paying their respects around his body after the battle.
