Grierson's Raid was a Union cavalry raid during the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. It ran from April 17 to May 2, 1863, as a diversion from Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's main attack plan on Vicksburg, Mississippi.
It was the basis of the 1959 movie Horse Soldiers which I think was the first Civil war movie I watched. Based on a novel by Harold Sinclair. Trailer here
The movie is a secret pleasure of mine; that and Shenandoah set me down the route of ACW wargaming many. many years ago now!
