As I have mentioned before my Grandfather was a tunneller in the Great War - he was a proto man as in this picture, rescuing expired tunnellers. Looking like something out of Jules Verne. I have been talking to my local museum about maybe doing something on tunnellers as there were quite a few local men doing it. The above book is very good - my brother bought it me for Christmas. The caption to the above cover photo is
Proto mine rescue apparatus. Rescue of a sapper on listening duty who has been pinned to the ground by a fall of roofing caused by the explosion of a hostile mine.

Brave, my goodness. I can barely think of anything more terrifying. Fighting a war in tunnels like that is truly the stuff of nightmares. I have such admiration for their courage.
