I have only just got around to watching this 2003 movie starring Tom Cruise. Reading
the wiki on the movie I realise that it's all fiction (surprise surprise) and the nearest one comes to as a historical precedent is the
French Military Mission - there was no military involvement from the United States. Some Frenchmen such as
Jules Brunet did however fight in the Boshin war and this is the nearest to a factual basis. Some of these Frenchmen did wear traditional Samurai attire such as Eugene Collache (pictured).
