Today in 1863

 

#OnThisDay in 1863, General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was wounded by friendly fire on the battlefield at Chancellorsville. Jackson’s surgeon, Dr. Hunter McGuire, would amputate the general’s left arm, but Jackson would die of pneumonia on May 10th.
The details of Jackson’s wounding are meticulously recounted in a letter written by Capt. Richard Eggleston Wilbourn, Jackson's signal officer, who was present when Jackson was shot. This letter is reprinted in its entirety on the web site of the Virginia Museum of History & Culture:
