When I was growing up my Granny gave me some French military binoculars. If you notice on this similar pair the steel plates had an infantry figure and a cavalry one with lines showing the distance. From the 1860s judging by the figures which had the legend angle de duplication. Sadly though I lost them. They had a war department broad arrow stamped on them and I think they were issued in the Boer War to a relative. Heavy brass things.
