The recruiting sergeant

The Recruiting Sergeant (The King's Shilling)

by Henry Nelson O'Neil
Staffordshire Heritage & Arts
Shugborough Hall
Milford, Stafford, Staffordshire, England, ST17 0XB
Date painted: 1855–1865
Oil on canvas, 127 x 152.5 cm
The painting appears to have been inspired by the (British)Volunteer movement of the early 1860s, which was in response to the threat of French invasion. The young man in the centre of the painting is being enlisted, despite the fears of his womenfolk.
