As a kid in the 1960s I remember WW I veterans that I could talk to but my knowledge at that time was too small to ask them questions about the war. One gentleman who had been badly wounded just said "war was the devil". It's too bad I only met my father's father once. There was a divorce in the family and he and my father were not close. My grandfather was in the Yankee Division in WW I and had also served on the Mexican border before WW I guarding against another raid by Pancho Villa! My grandfather was a sergeant and if the stories are true he was the highest ranking soldier still standing in his company because of the casualties.
