  3. Many thanks for Ralph for posting this splendid image, and to Scott for tracking down a bigger version. Does anyone recognize where in Paris the parade is taking place?

Imposing though the picture is, I am reminded of what Sir Michael Howard wrote as the final sentence of his great history of The Franco-Prussian War:

“Germany’s magnificent and well-deserved victory was, in a profound and unforeseeable sense, a disaster:for herself and for the entire world.:

  4. It would have been the "champs de Mars" near the "école militaire" at the actual place of the Eiffel Tower!

Western part of Paris, Champs Elysées or Versailles gardens but it's only guesses.

  6. Many thanks to paco and Durutti for their suggestions. My own hunch is that it is the Champs de Mars.

  7. The caption on the photo I found said "Champs Elysées" I can't verify that myself.
