Sape Volante 1853


By Raffet. Not sure what is going on in this picture. Raffet did an interesting study Episodes de la campagne d'Italie de 1859 but I can't find any copies online.

    I just looked "Sape volante" up and it seems each man just put down the gabion he was carrying and lies prone, waiting for an order to start digging to fill each gabion with earth.
