In case our French friends such as paco, Patrick and André do not realise it, the Rifle Brigade (now the Rifles) had/has a similar ethos and élite reputation to the chasseurs à pied. Henry Clifford was one of their brightest stars; clearly a fine officer and a very brave man, as well as a most accomplished watercolourist.
I recommend “Henry Clifford VC – his letters and sketches from the Crimea” (London, Michael Joseph, 1956). Sadly the watercolours reproduced in this book are nearly all in black and white. A new, full colour, edition of all his Crimean watercolours would be very welcome.
