Cantinieres of the Siege of Paris

    They're a rougher looking lot than usually portrayed as part of the regular French Army. The Cantinieres of the Siege and the Cantinieres of the Commune can be seen in period illustrations showing them as silly looking society women or hideous crones because of politics. Some Cantinieres of the Commune did not survive or were imprisoned by the Versailles government.

    A distinction between Cantinieres and women who fought has to be made as well but that's a different subject.
