Ralph, it's a pity that these re-enactors are wearing dragoon, rather than cuirassier helmets and, what's more, they are of the steel, more squat, pattern introduced well after the Franco-Prussian war. The correct appearance of cuirassier helmets in 1870 is shown in the Detaille painting of French cavalry with Bavarian prisoners that you have also posted today.
