    Have you tried the Life Magazine picture site? I just found many 100 prints on-line from the mid 1800s of military subjects. There are copies in various sizes, some watermarked with "LIFE" at the corner.

    Try various search words. Some are from period newspapers.

    Nice one of a Cantiniere fighting off a Cossack..
