French zouaves and grenadiers in camp, c. 1856


I am surprised this image isn't more famous. It's fascinating. All these early photographs are worth looking at closely.

    Alas, the men in bearskins are not Grenadiers, they are Sapeurs of the Voltigeurs of the Guard.
