The Diehards Crimean page

The Diehards are one of the UK's most celebrated living history associations - they recreate the Victorian soldier through a number of eras - this page is for their excellent Crimean project.

If you want to see a film of the Diehards recreating the Zulu war go here

Bell tents

An item I associate with the British forces in the Crimea is the bell tent. According to this piece about Mr and Mrs Driscoll of the Royal Scots in the Crimea
Each bell tent accommodated sixteen or seventeen men, but where there was a woman, fourteen including the woman and her husband.

I'm not sure when Bell tents came in - I thought maybe late Napoleonic - anyone know?

Bashi-Bazouks in the Crimea

Bashi-bazouk camp. These were Irregular soldiers of the Ottoman Army. They made quite an impression to Europeans and were often noted in diaries etc.
Download for free the 1857 book 12 months with the Bashi-Bazouks by Edward Money.
There was a British BB unit called Beatson's Horse. Money writer of the above book was in this unit. Explorer Richard Burton was on the staff of this unit.

History in 1/72

This is a great new blog from a group of German modellers and historians in various historical periods.

Bavarian infantry 1870

Haven't really done much on the German army of this period - so a few posts to try and rectify this.
According to the wiki
Bavarian army in the Franco-Prussian war

When the candidacy to the Spanish throne of Leopold, Prince of Hohenzollern led to a worsening in relations between Prussia and France in 1870, von Prankh mobilised the two Bavarian army corps on 14 July. The Bavarian Army Corps fought in the Franco-Prussian War as part of the III Army under Crown Price Friedrich Wilhelm (the I Army Corps under von der Tann, and the II Army Corps under von Hartmann).

The Bavarians under von Hartmann stormed Wissembourg and took part in the Battles of Wörth, Beaumont, Sedan and the Siege of Paris. Over 5,000 Bavarian soldiers died during the Franco-Prussian War.

André Jouineau

I like the style of this French researcher and artist. It's clear and concise. Mostly his work is around the 1914-18 or Napoleonic period but some is Second Empire. I am guessing this image is from this book with Delperier. See also this book on Grenadiers and Volitguers of the Garde Imperial of Napoleon III

Been trying to find some images by this French painter of military subjects. The large image is from the Bapaume panorama celebrating the battle in 1871.

French and other Hussars

If you have an interest in light cavalry of the period this page might be of interest to you.

68th Durham Light Infantry in the Crimea

Two interesting and contrasting photos by Fenton of this regiment in standard service dress and winter kit for the trenches.

Crimean War kepis

I have been very impressed by Mr Gaponov's reconstructions for the 1854 era - particularly as this has been a bit of a theme for me and this blog. I must get a kepi. It's reassuring to know there's top notch stuff out there. As far as I know Eugene is prepared to sell items outside the club so if you are interested email him at

Napoleon III magazine

Magazine of the second Empire.
While looking for stuff written by M Delperier I found this interesting journal - list here - list of back issues at the official site.

Louis Delperier

A person who seems to know a lot about the French army of the mid 19th century is this man -here's a list of some of his books at Amazon. Here he is recreating a Franco-Prussian war infantryman (left) for Military Illustrated and a soldier of 1859 for Tradition magazine. Annoying thing is I have these articles somewhere in my house but can I find them? Military illustrated also did an in-depth piece on the Foreign Legion at Camerone with information on kit etc. Louis Delperrier, 'The Legion at Camerone, 1863', Military Illustrated, No. 22

Images of the Malakoff

Some lovely watercolours of troops painted during the Crimean campaign here.

Reenacting the French in the Crimea

Let me introduce you to Eugene Gaponov from St Petersburg Russia. He and fellow club members are recreating the 18eme de ligne - voltigeurs - for the Crimea and are planning to take part in the Alma reenactment in September. It's a high quality project and Eugene has been very thorough finding original items and copying them as you can see from these photos.
Capote
What Mr Gaponov is looking for next is information about the capote from the 1845 reglement - can anyone help? Email address e_gaponov@eureca.ru
